Am I defined by my attitudes and behaviors of the past? If so, I am probably living in misery. If so, I minimize the opportunity in front of me by being a slave to my past. How do I get a better life, when I fail to forgive my past misgivings? Many think that they deserve to beat themselves up mercilessly in the present because of what they have done in the past. The opposite is true.
You have the power to recognize your past, and use those memories as a roadmap to where you don’t want to live any longer. You have the power to break free of self-loathing and self-hatred in order to become the person you want to be in the future. The only one stopping you, is you. No matter how many times people have told you, and you have told yourself that you can’t do this, you have the power. Know that tens of thousands of others have been right where you are, and have broken free from their past to redefine their future.
Today, I won’t forget my past, but use it to understand what and who I don’t want to be. I will recognize that when I actually get sober, my future becomes brighter, and will benefit those who I care about the most.
