“The image is one thing, and the human being is another. It’s very hard to live up to an image, put it that way.”

– Elvis Presley

In the lifestyle of use, we frequently don’t allow our insides to match our outsides. This means that we may project an image that we are alright, but on the inside we are in turmoil. When we maintain this stance in recovery, we are missing opportunities for change and growth that can lead to relapse. To truly be in recovery, means when we are struggling on the inside, we let our outsides show by reaching out for help and support. Looking good in a coffin is not the goal. Today, I will allow my insides to match my outsides. I will not project an image that I’m OK when I am not. The more vulnerable I make myself in recovery, the more likely I will work through issues and feel better about myself inside, and it will become easier to project a brighter outside image to those around me.
