If a song comes on a listening device that I don’t like, I can change the station or skip it. I may have people in my life that either doubt my ability to make this change, or worse are invested in keeping me engaged in the lifestyle of use, because when I am using, others don’t have to look at themselves and their benefits of getting sober. The importance of not placing myself in harm’s way is paramount. I do not have room in my life for the noise of the doubters. When I choose to keep the company of those who are not invested in my recovery, it weighs me down, and makes my journey that much more difficult. Today, I will distance myself from the doubters. I will not allow the negative messages to take up space in my head. I will remove myself from these situations, though it may be hard, and yet as simple as changing a song, when I realize how determined I am to see my recovery journey through to the end. Today, I have the power to commit myself, distance myself from the noise of negativity.
