Many people have successfully used 12-step programs alone to get sober. At Sober at Home, we believe in the concept of “We”, which is the first word of the first step. Sobriety is an inward journey, and part of the goal of getting sober is to incorporate “We” into the recovery process. On the other hand, people have viewed 12-step programs as a cult or have difficulty with the concept of God as a higher power. The purpose of these workbook exercises is to provide an overview of the 12 steps and to provide a perspective on how you can make use of the 12 steps in a program of recovery. This is not a replacement for 12-step programs or a sponsor. Rather, it provides a way of laying out the 12 steps so that you can begin to understand and incorporate the steps as a part of a complete program of recovery.
