A popular saying in AA meetings is “Poor me, poor me, pour me a drink.” Often, when I see myself as a victim, I am also giving myself permission to drink or drug to my victimhood. I no longer need to be a victim any longer. I can recognize that the choice to drink/drug is just that- my choice. No one is forcing me to drink or drug today. I can rise above it all and be the hero or heroine in the story. Everyone loves the story of an underdog. While I may have truly been a victim in the past, I don’t need to be one today. Today I will overcome being a victim. I will take control of my life and not seek to drown being a victim any longer in alcohol and drugs. Today I will see myself as a hero or heroine by staying the course of sobriety.
