“Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.”

-Garth Brooks

A man walked into a treatment program sharing how he used to go to sleep at night, praying that he would not wake up. His life had become so miserable, that he did not want to live anymore. Before that prayer could be answered he decided to give treatment one more try. The transformation he underwent during treatment was life changing. Before leaving treatment, he said that today he thanks God for not answering his prayers, because today he had life. That is what recovery is about. This is what recovery has to offer. A new rejuvenated life. Addiction takes us down a path that leaves us feeling useless and valueless. This was not the life you were meant to lead, nor do you need to be destined to a life of misery. Today, I will be thankful for my good fortune. I will have gratitude for the life I have the opportunity to lead, and that my life has not been taken as a result of my substance use. Today, I will be grateful for the unanswered prayers of my past.
