“My recovery must come first so that everything I love doesn’t have to come last.”

Sad Family

Recovery comes down to values and priorities. Many people have desperately tried to make me believe how much they love their family, and how nothing is more important than their families. But actions speak louder than words. When we are hurting ourselves through addiction, we are hurting those we love. When we miss family functions, birthdays and gatherings, or are miserable at those events because we want to be using our drug of choice, we are hurting those we care about most. Today, recognize that by taking care of ourselves and putting our recovery first, we are demonstrating a loving act to those we care about most. If we had cancer, and we decided to stop the treatment, when our life could otherwise be saved, we’d call it crazy and selfish. Take care of yourself today. Make sobriety your priority. Everything else you love will benefit in the process.
