“Life Is Really Simple, But We Insist On Making It Complicated.”

Keep Things Simple

In 12-Step programs there is a slogan that “It’s a simple program for complicated people.” The concept of abstinence is a simple one. No matter what, don’t pick up. No matter what, don’t give in to urges, cravings and temptations. We complicate it by questioning things like: “How come I don’t get everything back right away?” We complicate things when we experience an urge to use and allow it to build, like turning up the volume on a TV. We get to the point where we talk ourselves into using by complicating situations that draws us to a conclusion that the only way I can get out of the situation is by using. Today, I will keep things simple. I will stubbornly refuse to give in to urges, cravings and temptations. I will not allow myself to dwell on negative situations that only serve to amplify my desire to use. I will make connections that can offer me help in times of need, and seek the counsel of others to help me keep things in perspective.
