“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.”

– St. Francis of Assisi

Step by Step 2

12-Step programs are filled with slogans like: “One day at a time”, or “Keep it simple”. Whether you believe in 12-step programs or not, these slogans have meaning to anyone in recovery. We cannot solve problems that have taken years to develop in one day. But each day, we can address what is on our plate, accomplish the tasks that are right in front of us, and make progress that we can feel good about when our head hits the pillow each night. Small goal attainment represents progress towards a larger goal, and the larger goal becomes increasingly possible when we are doing the little things. Today, I will do the necessary things that reinforce my recovery. I will demonstrate that I am capable in recovery, and take humble pride in knowing that I am building towards something meaningful. I have made the impossible possible in addiction, now I will show myself, and anyone that cares about me that I can do the same in recovery.

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.”
